Three Johnstone High School pupils have gained recognition for their sporting success with selection for the Scottish Volleyball Association’s Flying Scots Programme. James Orr, Harry Orr and Logan MacDonald, all current S5 pupils, represented the regional West of Scotland Team at a tournament last Sunday.
Harry has gone one step further and been selected for the U17 Scottish national team, with James and Logan making the reserve list, despite only playing the sport for the last 8 months. He will represent his country for the first time in a 3-day tournament at St Andrews University at the end of this month.
The boys paid tribute to Andy Fleming, a visiting coach to Johnstone High School over the last academic year, for his support and development of their talent. “He’s a brilliant coach and always encourages us,” said James. “I was surprised to be selected for Scotland because I’ve only been playing for 8 months but I’m delighted to be playing and also for James and Logan being reserves,” added Harry.
Lynne Hollywood, Head Teacher at Johnstone High School, said: “We are delighted for the boys to be recognised for their hard work and dedication to improving their skills over the last school year. We hugely value the coaches, teachers and volunteers that contribute to all our extra-curricular opportunities and it’s nice when their work is recognised through the success of the pupils. We wish the three boys well in their upcoming matches for the regional and national team.”
